In preparation to leave the University of Ibadan

TWENTY FOUR HOURS

Twenty-four hours to go –
the music wearies on
As my right foot hits the tarmac
Of a greener turn

Twenty-four hours to go
and in bemused ecstasy
I watch frozen sand grains distil
In a harmattan mist

Twenty-four hours to go
parting words fail my lips
More so, the echoing emptiness
Of my receding feet

Twenty-four hours to go and you leave
only the memories of flimsy shadows…

Twenty-four hours to go
but the world will never know
The cosmos hollow revving through my soul

Twenty-four hours to go
Should I cry, sigh
Or write you a romantic line?

Twenty-four hours to go
And I know not how to say good-bye
